Emails, Errands, and Exhaustion

A Mundane Monday – Post

Last week felt like an Olympic marathon of deadlines. Every morning started with a flood of emails,  the kind that make you wonder if “micromanagement” has officially become a sport. I kept telling myself, just push through, but somewhere between what felt like spreadsheet #17 and email #198, I realized I was running on fumes. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating the numbers, but believe me, it was a lot.

I had once promised myself I’d never do this again, sacrifice my well-being for work. My last job taught me that lesson the hard way,  burnout, health scares that landed me in the hospital, and a long climb back to balance. Yet here I was again, slipping into old habits, convincing myself it was just this one time.

By Friday, I was completely spent. My husband, on the other hand, was bursting with energy,  jamming out with his friends in his office, guitars blazing and alternative rock shaking the walls. I smiled, half-exhausted, half-amused, and called it a night.

Saturday came early. I was out the door by 8:00 AM, errands mode fully activated. I bought yet another driving package (third time’s the charm, right?), got my nails done in the most beautiful chocolate brown, and made it to my orthodontist, who reminded me once again that retainers are forever.

Lunch with my sister at our favorite sushi spot was the perfect mid-day pause before I had to rush home and get ready for my sister-in-law’s 20th birthday in Westchester. Except… I didn’t really get ready. I was too tired to care about being cute, so I Ubered up in full “I tried” mode. We played our nostalgic 2012–2016 hits, but the Gen Z crowd looked at us like we were museum exhibits. Eventually, the aux cord went to the youngest in the room, a humbling moment for sure. After the cake, I felt the wine hit and decided it was time to head home. Or so I thought.

My husband had his karaoke night, and my sister and her boyfriend had gone to his gig after attending a Friendsgiving nearby. They all came home buzzing with post-party energy and somehow convinced me to keep the night going. I stayed in my cozy clothes (no regrets there), but by 4 AM, I was officially over it, cranky, tired, and counting down the minutes until bed.

Sunday morning arrived with a mix of hangover and redemption. My sister and I laced up for our “hot girl walk,” grabbed coffee, and picked up a few groceries to make a healthy, soul-soothing breakfast for “the hungover champs.” After some light work and a much needed nap, I finally sat in bed reflecting on the chaos of the week. And that’s when it hit me. No matter how many parties, deadlines, or errands fill the calendar, my energy isn’t infinite. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and mistake it for productivity, but the truth is, we can’t pour from an empty cup.

So this week, my mantra is simple: Protect your peace like it’s your paycheck. Because at the end of the day, burnout isn’t a badge of honor, it’s a warning sign.
