A Thoughtful Tuesday

The other day, I caught myself zoning out mid-conversation. It wasn’t that the person was boring or that I wasn’t interested, it was just… surface. You know, the kind of small talk that loops endlessly around the weather, weekend plans, and how busy we all are. I smiled, nodded, and added my polite responses, but inside I was quietly wondering, is this it?
I can do the small talk, the quick exchanges about the weather, the weekend, the usual. I’ve learned how to nod, smile, ask the right questions. But after a few minutes, I start to feel… uncomfortable. Like there’s an invisible wall between us that I can’t pretend isn’t there. Small talk has its purpose, I know that. It keeps the day moving, keeps things polite. It’s part of the rhythm of everyday life, at work, with people you see in passing, the ones who orbit your world but never really step inside it.
But when it comes to the people I choose, the ones I spend my time with, the ones who see my world up close, I want something deeper. I want conversations that stretch past the obvious. The kind that make you think, make you feel, make you see each other.
Because when you connect with someone beyond the surface, it feels different. It’s like art, that rush when a song hits the right note or a film captures something you didn’t know how to say. It’s that quiet spark of recognition: you get it.
So yes, I can do small talk. But it’s not my comfort zone, not my cup of tea. I want the real stuff, the honest, unguarded moments that remind you why people matter in the first place. Maybe that’s the thing I’m learning. You don’t have to connect with everyone deeply. No one really owes you that for sure. But when you do find that kind of connection, appreciate, hold onto it or at least cherish it, because those moments are special.
