A Week Fueled by Comfort and Cocktails

A Mundane Monday Post –

Last week was one of those weeks, the kind that starts loud, gets emotional, then slowly softens into something calm and cozy before you even realize it.

Monday hit the ground running. It was busy, festive, and full of last-minute energy as I rushed to finalize my classroom door for the holiday decorating competition. Between small celebrations throughout the day and the knowledge that break was just around the corner, everything felt heightened. When the results were announced, I landed an honorable mention. No win, no Knicks tickets, no Broadway tickets, no $150 restaurant gift card. Did get an extra break, hopefully that will be useful.

I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. I really went all in creatively, and I wanted that win. I let myself feel a little sad about it, but only a little. After work, I straightened up my room, made sure everything was in order, and headed home, reminding myself that effort still counts even when it doesn’t come with prizes.

By Wednesday the 24th, I was officially in potato mode. No plans. No pressure. Just rest. After two short but jam packed days, doing absolutely nothing felt necessary. We stayed in, relaxed, and continued some decluttering, quiet productivity mixed with intentional laziness.

When Thursday rolled around, we headed to my in-laws’ place in Westchester. It was exactly what the holiday should be: good food, meaningful conversation, and time together. I made some very solid lychee martinis, gifts were exchanged, and we just enjoyed being present with one another.

Friday stayed low-key too, which felt like a gift. It snowed heavily, giving us the perfect excuse to stay inside, stay warm, and do very little.

Saturday, however, had a different agenda. We spent time with my family downtown for our own slightly delayed Christmas celebration. Afterward, we wandered around the neighborhood, had one too many Manhattans and espresso martinis, somehow ended up in Brooklyn, and closed the night with excellent Turkish food, absolutely worth the detour.

Sunday was a full reset. Sleeping in, eating well, and doing nothing ambitious whatsoever. The kind of day that gently prepares you for whatever comes next.

Looking back, the week flew by. It started with disappointment and hustle but ended in rest, laughter, and much-needed calm. With New Year’s Eve coming up, I’m hoping this next week keeps that same chill energy, nothing dramatic, just good company and a soft landing into the new year.

But we’ll see.
