A WD Wednesday post

The air tonight feels like a movie, crisp, gold-tinged, full of slow moving light through the sky of clouds. The kind that filters through the trees just enough to make the world feel magical. I took the long way home, pass the parkway, through the park, and then back on to the city streets. As I walked leaves would crack underneath each foot, each one filled with the nostalgic feel for the fall season. The neighborhood felt alive but unhurried, kids’ laughter skipping down sidewalks, the faint hum of someone raking, the quiet comfort of October settling in.
I stopped by the market not too far from home, the one that feels like its been the same for decades, and smells like fresh coffee to pick up a few things for dinner. The cashier nodded hello, we’ve shared enough evenings like this that a smile says more than words. I filled my basket with sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, a handful of arugula, a shiny green apple, a little log of honey goat cheese, and the smallest bottle of maple syrup I could find. I paused by the wine aisle, a nice red would’ve been perfect tonight, but I stuck with my plan of water, simple and clear. Hydration over indulgence, at least for today. We have been trying to keep wine for just special occasions.
Back home, the kitchen filled with warmth, sweet potatoes steaming into velvet mash, Brussels sprouts roasting until their edges turned bronze and crisp, meatballs sizzling in the pan like quiet punctuation. I opened my balcony door to let the smell pass throughout. The salad came together like autumn on a plate, arugula, softened by apple slices, golden raisins, creamy goat cheese, and walnuts all drizzled with maple vinaigrette that glowed amber under the light.
We ate slowly, talking about work, about the day, about nothing and everything. The kind of conversation that is without a destination but still landing exactly where it should.
After the dishes were stacked and the kitchen lights dimmed, we sank into the couch, wrapped in blankets and the easy hush of a home well fed. A movie flickered to life, soft and familiar, while a warm coffee drink steamed between my hands, rich, comforting, a quiet reward.
Outside, the wind rustled through the trees, carrying the scent of a cool woodsy fall breeze. Inside, everything felt perfectly still, the world turning gently, autumn breathing through the open balcony door, and us, just here, cozy, content, and exactly where we were meant to be.
