How the week slowly softened

A Mundane Monday Post-

This past week, the anxiety hit me almost immediately after the weekend ended. I could feel the weight of work stress settling in, too much to do, not enough time, and a lingering cloud of negativity all around. I knew early on that I needed a pause, something grounding. So I headed to Union Square after work this week to meet my sister.

What I needed most was simple, someone I could be completely unfiltered with. No forced enthusiasm. No pretending. Just comfort, acceptance, and ease. We went to KazuNori for dinner, it was surprisingly empty when we arrived, though halfway through our meal a line had formed outside. After dinner, we wandered through the Union Square holiday market, letting the lights and movement soften the edges of the day. We ended the night at Barnes & Noble, treating ourselves to books we’d been meaning to finally crack open. It was such a lovely, unhurried evening. My sister walked me to Madison Avenue so I could catch my bus home. It was one of those nights that quietly fills your cup without asking much in return.

Later, I noticed I had accumulated some credit card rewards, and on a whim, I decided to use them to book a small birthday weekend getaway in the Hudson Valley. Nothing extravagant, just a quiet, quaint town by the Hudson, a place to unplug and replenish.

By Friday, I was beyond drained, mostly from ongoing work situations. Sensing it, my husband suggested a spontaneous dinner date. We made our way to City Island with one restaurant in mind, but after overhearing a valet mention a holiday work party, we quickly changed course. I looked up the restaurant next door and saw a single reservation available at 6:45 p.m. and it was already 6:35. Perfect timing. The evening unfolded effortlessly, great food, attentive service, and the comfort of being fully present together.

Saturday was slow and grounding. We ran errands, rested, and took the day as it came. By early evening, we got ready and headed to my husband’s cousin’s birthday celebration. We arrived early, which felt just right. There were regular beers, a fully stocked bar, and plenty of non-alcoholic options. I stuck with ginger beer mixed with pineapple, refreshing and surprisingly perfect. We stayed later than expected, but not so late that we were the last ones there.

On Sunday morning, I woke up to a winter wonderland. Everything outside was covered in fresh snow. I felt an immediate pull to step outside and take it all in. The walk was quiet, still, and honestly magical, a beautiful, grounding way to close out the week.

Sometimes, it’s those small, unplanned moments that restore you the most. So there, that’s a little bit of my week.
